Other uses of pituitary hormones

For men with Kallmann's syndrome and other forms of HH there is another us of hCG, normally Profasi or Pregnyl.

hCG on its own will stimulate testosterone production by the testes. Some doctors will prescribe hCG on its own just for testosterone replacement, without the need for any sperm production. This testicular testosterone production does produce a more natural supply of testosterone but does require one or two injections a week.

If sperm production is required later on hMG or another form of FSH can be added to stimulate sperm production.

It has been found that this testicular production of testosterone aids future fertility treatments when hMG or FSH is added later.

Since FSH preparations are quite expensive some doctors will prescribe hCG for testosterone maintenance and then only add in a FSH preparation such as Gonal-F or Puregon when fertility is required.
